Sweet little Elián Gonzalez is now a card-carrying member of Cuba's
Young Communist Union.
As you may recall, Elián became an updated symbol of communism versus democracy during an international custody battle in 2000 .
Since returning to Cuba, it seems that Fidel Castro has become a mentor to young Elián. Elián has also become a national hero for surviving "being sequestered by the [capitalist] mafia in Miami."
Fidel transferred temporary power to his brother Raúl Castro as "president" in 2006. Since then, Raúl has implemented unparalleled reforms such as limited cell phone and Internet usage. Raúl is 77 years old, Fidel is 81 years old.
Is Fidel working towards strengthening Elián to be the young muscle of the communist cause?
I am reminded of a similar situation in Spain back in the 1970s. Dictator Francisco Franco selected young, royal heir Juan Carlos I to continue his fascist regime as his personal successor. Much like Elián and Fidel's relationship, Juan Carlos would meet and appear with the dictator Franco at official and ceremonial state functions.
After the dictator's death in 1975, the Spaniards held their breath. Would Juan Carlos I carry on his mentor/predecessor's plans?
Much to [most of] the Spaniards delight, two days after Franco's death the newly crowned King Juan Carlos I transitioned the country from a 28-year dictatorship to parliamentary democracy.
Could the same be in store for Cuba? Could Elián be Cuba's "chosen one"?
Cuba libre.
